Former Titanium Bike Builder Wins $5 a Foot

HUGE congratulations to Steve McMahon, the winner of this year's 5 Bucks a Foot fundraiser! Steve donated on a whim, years after first reading about SBTS' Connected Communities vision in the L.A. Times, and wanted to support the concept. Actually winning the grand-prize one-off Santa Cruz Bicycles Tallboy 29 was a complete shock. "This is so mind-blowing," he said of his new bike. "I'm just floored. It's such a cool bike." And this is someone who knows his bikes—Steve was the framebuilder behind McMahon Cycles, handcrafting around 4,000 titanium frames in the 1990s with his last name on the downtube, before he moved on to a career in aerospace engineering. Steve has not yet ridden in the Lost Sierra, but it's at the top of his list and he plans to make it happen next spring. Well Steve, now you've got the perfect bike for it.
