SBTS Storrie Student Trail Crew
Today I witnessed the Closing Ceremonies for our Storrie Student Trail Crew, lead by Cody and Morgan. This was absolutely amazing for me, watching as each crew member was pulled up and awarded certificates in: hand tool use and care, basic trail maintenance, cross-cut and handsaw technique, and grip hoist operation. They were also given a Patagonia shirt with the SBTS Trail Crew emblem imprinted, and they got paid for 160 hours.
What was most impressive and inspiring for me was to watch as Cody told a special story about his experience with each individual crewmember; showing passion, direction and a big heart. He brought nearly everyone to tears, including himself. The crew, parents, Forest Service and program advisors had nothing but positive things to say about the leadership and kindness of Cody and Morgan. Thank you both!
Beyond the great work of Cody and Morgan, I’d like to call out the people that worked behind the scenes to make the Storrie Crew a success: Heather, Debbie and Tara- I believe your efforts allowed Cody and Morgan to feel confident, well supported and able to focus-in on the students and projects at hand. The menu planning, shopping, van swapping, program development, administration, reporting and everything else that went into it, all took a herculean effort on each of your part. I cannot thank you all enough for your work and your continued support of SBTS.
A great big thanks to our partners for their support of the SBTS Storrie Student Trail Crew: Plumas National Forest, Storrie Fire Restoration Team (Michele Jimenez-Holtz and Erika Brenzovich), Dave Kinateder fire ecologist from the Forest Service, Plumas Unified School District (Rob Wade), Patagonia (Kim Jardine), Camelback (Kevin Taylor), Clif Bar (Peter Berridge), REI (Erin Harrington), Scott Lawson for his Plumas County history and unmatched trail knowledge, Justin Kooyman from the Pacific Crest Trail Association, Ayoobs in Quincy for the deal on boots, Rick Stock at Feather River College for the use of the tents, Longboards Grill for the healthy hookup on in season produce, Yuba Expeditons for the van rental for transportation and Rob Bixler, our Backcountry Physician.
